The Mens Cooking Workshop is an invitation to take a personal journey of growth and transformation in the kitchen, alongside other Men.

 

ABOUT THE COURSE

The Mens Cooking Workshop is a unique opportunity for Men to come together to develop greater confidence, competence and enjoyment in the kitchen. In this four-part series, you will learn how to prepare simple, easily reproduced dishes that are nourishing and delicious. Along the way, you’ll be taught professional chef tips and techniques which will greatly enhance your cooking knowledge and capability, giving you greater access to creativity, intuition and sovereignty in the kitchen which will have ripples beyond this.

You’ll get to explore your relationship with food and cooking, and take part in a process of self discovery and exploration. The Wholefood Kitchen offers a context whereby cooking is not just an activity which allows us to nourish ourselves, but to find a deeper connection with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

This is a cooking course unlike any other, combining two of my greatest passions: sharing knowledge and experience of wholefood cooking; and creating spaces of growth and empowerment for Men. The Mens Cooking Workshop is a space for Men to take part in journey of self-exploration, self-realisation, personal growth and empowerment: leading to a greater sense of sovereignty and enjoyment when it comes to preparing and sharing food, which will have considerable impact outside of the kitchen.

Taking part in this course is an opportunity for Men to (safely) step beyond their comfort zone, come into their body, acquire new skills and confidence in the realm of the kitchen. In the process, you’ll be invited to connect with and develop considerable your own creativity and intuition, and experience the simple joy of coming together to prepare and share food as a group.

WHY COOKING?

As Men, we are invited to step into the provider role to support ourselves and our family. One of the most important ways we can do this is through being proficient at cooking: the ability to create food for ourselves and others which nourishes the mind, body and soul. This course provides a safe, supportive space for Men to develop their skills, confidence and enjoyment in this domain.

But it also offers much, much more than this.

Cooking is a path through which we can access and experience Kotahitanga: one-ness, wholeness, unity, harmony in oneself and with others. We can experience direct connection with gratitude. Abundance. Personal sovereignty.

Cooking brings us back in connection with the present, and our own presence.

We both step out of time, and beyond time. We are suddenly aware of the infinity of the present moment, while also reaching into the past and the future.

In the kitchen, we get to truly appreciate and play with the fruits of the earth, and the fruits of others’ labour, passion and commitment to growing, to nurturing, to creating food.

We connect with the day, and with the season. We tune into the rhythms of the cosmos. The influence of the moon and the stars in the creation and harvesting of the food that we eat.

We come together in the kitchen to share and appreciate the gift of life, of love, to nourish and be nourished. We come back to earth. We connect with our place in it, as part of an entire, interconnected system.

In doing so, we come back to ourselves.

WHAT WE’LL COVER

Cooking Skills & Techniques: Learn professional chef basics that will enable you to tackle recipes and create your own nourishing meals with confidence.

Knife Skills: Master the essential tools of the kitchen safely and confidently.

Kitchen Essentials: Get familiar with must-have kitchen tools and pantry staples that will elevate your cooking.

Cooking with Fire: Connect with the primal and essential experience of cooking over fire and flame.

Mind & Body: Experience cooking as way to ground and connect with ourselves, to work with and transform our emotional state as we engage with the art of transformation of raw ingredients into nourishing meals.

Shared lunch: At the end of each session, we’ll sit down together to enjoy the meal we have created, savouring the results of our efforts and celebrating the bond we will create together as a group.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Cooking Confidence & Competence: Develop your skills in the kitchen through direct experience, and the benefits of working together in the kitchen with other Men.

Brotherly Connection: Bond over the shared experience of cooking and sharing food together, and build connections with other like-minded Men.

Community Support: Stay connected with the group throughout the course and beyond via a dedicated WhatsApp group: sharing experiences, tips, and providing support and encouragement to each another.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course will run over 4 sessions, held fortnightly from 9am – 1pm over a series of Saturdays, with each session concluding with a shared sit-down lunch. Each session will be focussed on a specific theme, covering a selection of dishes incorporating cooking fundamentals which will greatly enhance your confidence and competence in the kitchen. You will be provided with recipes for each session, with space for note-taking during the sessions.

Between the fortnightly sessions you will be encouraged to connect with other participants via a dedicated WhatsApp group to follow up on each session. You will be invited to share your cooking journey with other Men throughout the course; witness and support each other’s progress.

Location

The retreat will be held at a stunning (covered) outdoor location in native bush in the Waitakere Ranges.

Themes

One Pot Cooking

Learn to create stocks, soups and stews from scratch, which provides a solid foundation to explore a whole range of cooking skills, and sets the context for the course.

Gourmet BBQ

Elevate your BBQ game with tips and techniques for outdoor cooking of Meat, Seafood and vegetables, with dressings, sides and salads which will take your BBQ to a whole new level.

Mediterranean Grill

We’ll create a vibrant, wholesome spread using fresh ingredients and quality produce that celebrates the richness and flavours of the mediterranean. 

Curry Nights

Learn the basics for creating curries which will open a path to creating rich, aromatic dishes from around the world, and provide you with a winning template for family meals.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Full payment is required prior to the commencement of the course. If you cancel your place 2 weeks prior to the first session date you will receive a refund minus the 50% deposit. If you cancel your place within 1 week of the first session you will not receive a refund. However, if you need to cancel and we manage to fill your space we will transfer your place to someone else and refund you the full amount minus any transaction fees. Please note, if we need to cancel the programme for any reason, you will receive a full refund.
